Guinness Gluten Test

Today I tested the famous Guinness Extra Stout beer. I occasionally drank draught Guinness in bars but I never tried it in bottles before. Well, a good Guinness is best served in an old pub with friends coming in a pint glass with a creamy, dome-shaped head. For a gluten test the bottled Guinness will do it as the ingredients should be the same.

Beer: Guinness
Producer: St. James’s Gate Brewery/Diageo
Originating country: Ireland
Brewing location: Ireland
Bottle size: 0.33 l = approx. 11 Oz.
Alcohol by volume: 4.1%
Ingredients: water, barley malt, roasted barley, hops, yeast (translated from German)
Miscellaneous:

Test Kit: Imutest Gluten-in-Food Kit

Test result: There is a clearly visible pink test spot on the left of the test area ( T ) which indicates the presence of gluten. According to the instructions a “very low gluten” level of 20 to 100 ppm should give a test spot which is weaker or similar in intensity to that of the control spot ( C ). Please find some more information here. The test spot appears lighter than the control spot.

On a scale from 1 to 20 I would rate Guinness 3/4 so in this test it has around 20-30 ppm. Even though this test is positive please note it is not a medical advice – see my facts page.

This result hurts my heart 🙁

I was really hoping Guinness would come in lower. I really miss it in my Irish dishes now that I have been diagnosed with Celiac.

    I have gluten intollerance.
Here is the really good news for all beer lovers.
We live in Belgium and here they brew a fine, organic glutenfree amber beer named Brunehaut amber; the same brewery also makes blond, triple (stronger (8%) blond) and white … and a “season”al top yeast bear (slightly sour). The last three have no Wheat in them at all.

Another Brewery “slaapmutske” makes a very fine dark beer that is glutenfree, it tastes full bodied , soft and malty in taste with hints of caramel, we use it in stews. It may be a glutenfree substitute for guinnes and other dark beers.

Hi Susan, thanks for the tips. Hope I will get the chance to the try the beers you listed. Cheers Steffen

its worth noting this test is on Guiness Extra Stout, NOT Guiness Draft. I have an auto immune disease and am sensitive to gluten and I can have Guiness Draft. This site says that Guiness draft is actually less than 5ppm! http://smartgurlsolutions.com/2018/04/16/guinness-stout/ hopefully folks can start drinking away!

Thanks Mike, this is awesome. I didn’t know there was another site testing Guinness. And I would love to have an extra cold Guinness again 🙂

So what is the gluten ppm of a pint of Guinness poured in a pub?
All I can find is the data for cans or bottles.
    Has anyone tried it?

Interesting read on our favourite topic https://expertbrewing.com/how-much-gluten-is-in-beer-all-beer-types-compared/

It references that other site that Mike mentioned that tested for Guinness Draught. Also I read on article that tested Czech beers that Guiness Draft and Murphy’s draft guiness where also tested as comparisons. I think the both the Guiness and the Murphy’s were below 20ppm. Possibly if you read the above article because they are filtered so much?

Did you happen to test the Guinness cans?
