During my recent trip to Japan I had the chance to try locally brewed beers. I bought a bottle of Kirin Heartland actually because of the nice bottle. Taste was average, malty with a good finish.

Test result: There is no indication of the presence of gluten above 5 ppm. OK, this is a rather unknown beer which is even difficult to pronounce for non-native German speakers. Also the taste is rather average in my eyes. So why do I test it? The reason is that the brewery claims to be the oldest brewery in the world. Well, not sure whether this is true and I will actually leave it with you to search the internet and investigate. But let’s see what’s the gluten test result.

More than two years ago I tested Budweiser – well, the American Budweiser. It was about time to test the ‘real’ Budweiser from Czech Republic. Here you go.

The German Weissbier is very famous also outside of Germany. Weiss is German for white but the name could also refer to wheat which is Weizen in German. On the label of Paulaner Weißbier you actually see this special German letter: ß

This actually means double-s but the letter ß only exists in German as far as I know. On the label you can also read Hefe which is yeast and Naturtrüb which means unfiltered/naturally cloudy.

So we know this beers contains wheat and is moreover not filtered. Despite the fact Weissbier is really refreshing and suits well to a lot of delicious foods it might not be the best idea to consume it if you are Coeliac. Test result: A clearly visible red line appears on the right of the test stick ( T ). The red line indicates the presence of gluten equal to or above 20 ppm. As the line is dark red I assume this beer contains a lot of gluten. The blue line on the left test area ( C ) is a control line and indicates that the extract/sample is suitable, the test has been performed correctly and all reagents are active. The winner of the recent Polish beer poll is Tyskie Gronie. Taste and corbonation of Tyskie  is good, it finishs a bit flat but it generally is a good beer. And gluten seems to be very low, see the result below.

If you like Japanese food and want a beer to your Sushi or Donburi in your favourite Japanese restaurant then this test is for you. But not only outside Japan this test might be useful for people with Celiac Disease. The number of affected people seems to increase also in Japan. After I tested the Krombacher Pils back in May I now test their lager beer called Hell which means bright. Krombacher Hell is a decent lager, quaffable, malty and hoppy. I actually like it and prefer it to their Pils. And according to my knowledge this is the first time it gets tested on its gluten level.

This post is for my Australian friends and loyal visitors Adam and Les. It is hard to find Australian beer in Germany, even the most famous ones like Fosters and XXXX are difficult to get here. According to Adam the best brewery on a large scale is Coopers and luckily I was able to find a shop where I could get Coopers Pale Ale. This beer is not filtered as it is naturally fermented in the bottle, leaving some sediment. From experience I know that filtration is an important factor to reduce gluten so the gluten test result below is no surprise. The filtered ones Coopers Clear and Cloopers Lager are unfortunately not available here.
